Frequently Asked Questions

What is HeritageHunter? +

HeritageHunter is a location-based mobile game where you collect UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit sites in person within 500 meters, or collect remotely from anywhere — both are completely free.

Is HeritageHunter really free? +

Yes — all features including remote collecting are completely free. There are no tickets, subscriptions, or paywalls. If you'd like to support the app, optional support tiers are available, but they have no effect on gameplay.

How many sites are there? +

There are currently 1,248 UNESCO World Heritage Sites across 171 countries. We update the list as UNESCO adds new sites.

What platforms are supported? +

HeritageHunter is available on iOS 17 and later. Android support is not currently planned.

Is my location data shared? +

No. Your location is processed entirely on your device to determine proximity to heritage sites. We never transmit your location data to any server.

How does the XP system work? +

You earn XP by collecting sites (100 base XP + bonuses by type) and unlocking achievements (50–1000 XP by rarity). There are 50 levels with a maximum of 500,000 XP.

Can I contribute my photos to the app? +

Yes. We would typically like to feature 3 photos you took of a World Heritage Site on that site's page inside the app. Each photo will be credited as Photo by your name, with a clickable link to your Instagram or website.

The photos should be taken by you, high quality, and free of watermarks. If needed to fit the app layout, we may crop, resize, or compress them slightly, but we will not otherwise alter the content or sell them separately.

You keep the copyright to your photos. This would be a non-exclusive license for use inside the Heritage Hunter app. If you later want to replace a photo, update the link, or ask us to remove it, you can let us know anytime. If you'd like to contribute photos, please visit our contact page and send us an email.
